WHAT DOES THE CAMERA DEPARTMENT DO?
The Camera department is where the cinematography and visual aesthetics of a film come to life. This department focuses on capturing the director’s vision. Thus, this group is made up of various crew members who help execute those tasks, such as the director of photography, camera operators, assistant cameraman, and digital imaging technicians. Everyone in the camera department reports to the director of photography (also called the cinematographer) for direction.
Before picking up a camera, our Take One youth first learned to understand the functionality of the camera. Starting with our Intro to Cinematography sessions, our program stresses the importance of “why” behind a film’s imagery and decision making. Take One jumps into the comprehension of the exposure triangle made up of ISO, aperture and shutter speed – all essential camera basics.
After each session our youth are then able to apply other elements such as camera angles, storyboards, shot lists, cinematic terminology, equipment, accessories, composition and more!
